GENESIS BE
Genesis Be is an activist first and an artist second. She graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of
arts with a focus on Fine Arts and a dual degree in political science. Her work ties together her
passion for social justice and her sensual expression as a queer woman of color who grew up in
the deep south. A Mississippi native, she challenges her audience's concept of race, sexuality,
ownership and human dignity.
Publications such as The Associated Press, New York Times, NY Daily News, ABC News, VICE
Impact have featured her activism, sharing her message of racial healing, gender equality, and
youth empowerment. She is the subject of a Moral Courage Project documentary “Mississippi
Turning” by executive producers Sarah Silverman and Aunjanue Ellis (slated for a 2022
release).
Be is best known for her art piece “My State Flag” and for gaining National attention in her
theatrical protest against the MS State Flag. In 2020, her collaborative efforts saw a historical
victory when Mississippi changed its State Flag after flying over
120 years.
